Eliza Kopalak is an online therapist

What attracted you to become a therapist?

I felt that working with people was exactly what I needed to do. I just followed this insight.

Where did you train?

I trained first at the Psychosynthesis Trust in London and did my Advanced Diploma there but afterwards I kept on training all over the world: in Amsterdam, Portland, Warsaw, and Hawaii.

Can you tell us about the type of therapy you practise?

It is integrative psychotherapy with a transpersonal perspective, which means I use methods and techniques that I adjust to a particular person according to her/his needs and capacities.

Transpersonal means that my understanding of the human psyche is informed by the nature of reality. What it means for the client is that I bring a larger perspective from which I see my clients for who they are and where are they going with their processes.

How does psychosynthesis help?

The idea is that we unfold any symptoms and work with the particular process of each individual. I think is important to work also with the body and its symptoms, with dreams, and childhood dreams.

What sort of people do you usually see?

People come to me with a variety of issues. I see couples and individuals. The most common issues are to do with internal conflicts, inner criticism, trauma, and wounding.

Have you noticed any recent mental health trends or wider changes in attitude?

It is a very challenging time we are going through as a society, we have so many issues and conflicts. People who come to therapy want to change something. It is a time of turbulence and transitions.

What do you like about being a therapist?

I love the fact that I can focus in my work on studying the psyche and nature and connect to people on such a profound level.

What is less pleasant?

I think at this moment I find that I have limited capacity/energy and time to work.

How long have you been with Welldoing and what you think of us?

I have been on and off for many years now with Welldoing. I like the fact that it builds into a good resource for clients and therapists.

Do you ever suggest books or apps to clients?

At this moment I am reading Dispelling Wetiko by Paul Levy and I find it is the perfect read for the times we are in.

What you do for your own mental health?

I love connecting to nature, swimming in the sea and streams, hiking, exercising, and having coffee in town with a friend.

You are an online therapist. What can you share with us about seeing clients in this way?

As I work online with people all over the world it is really hard to answer that question.

What do you wish people knew about therapy?

Perhaps that this process is about them and what they bring to the session. How much trust they have. The more responsibility people take for their experience the more successful the therapy will be.

What did you learn about yourself in therapy?

Out of many discoveries over the years I find that getting to know myself and understanding that I am a complex and multidimensional being and that my external world is a reflection of my internal dynamics.
