About Me

How I work

I offer both short and long-term therapy to individuals and my intention is to help you to find a way forward whatever your issues may be. You will be able to talk about anything in a confidential space, knowing that I will not be judging or criticising you. I am a friendly, calm and warm person.

I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, which means that I can adapt my way of working to meet your needs, timeframe and personality. I incorporate Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) which promotes an evolutionary and bio-psycho-social approach. We all have tricky brains that have evolved over time and through no fault of our own, this can make coping with our thoughts and feelings quite challenging sometimes. We will think about your problems in the light of your specific situation and context. In CFT we try to cultivate a Compassionate Mind that can help us to deal with strong emotions. We will work with imagery and mindfulness and use chairwork and other exercises to explore your feelings and where patterns of behaviour began.

We can work together on a short term basis (e.g. up to 6 sessions) if you have a specific issue that you would like to work on or I also offer longer-term therapy where we can look at larger or more complex difficulties.

Therapy can seem quite daunting at first but I aim to make you feel welcome and put you at ease.  My clients have commented that having a safe, non-judgmental space has helped them to find new confidence and clarity.  Together we will develop helpful tools for you to take into your daily life.

My experience

I feel fortunate to have worked with people from a variety of different backgrounds and with a range of issues. I have particular experience in working with people dealing with stress, panic and anxiety, anger, bereavement and loss, rape and sexual assault, childhood abuse, depression and low self-esteem. I have worked in universities and higher education for over 15 years and have an in-depth understanding of the pressures both staff and students are facing. I enjoy working with students, including mature students, and have valued the opportunity of accompanying them through an important time of transition.

This list is not exhaustive and if you would like to speak more on the phone about why you are seeking counselling and to get a sense of whether I might be the right therapist for you, please get in touch.
