Isabella Whitaker
Integrative psychotherapistAbout Me
Hello, I'm Isabella, an integrative therapist offering long-term, in-depth, relational psychotherapy. If you find yourself here, it is likely that something doesn't feel right for you or that you are suffering in some way. Perhaps it has been that way for a long time or perhaps it has developed more recently. Whatever it is that you are feeling, and how ever long it has been there, I will hold a supportive space for you to explore your experience, feel heard and seen, and find a way to live meaningfully.
I am trained in the existential, humanistic and psychodynamic modalities, but above all my approach is relational. This means that the relationship that you and I create together has meaning and is of importance in the work. The therapeutic relationship offers the opportunity to safely explore parts of yourself that you may have kept hidden for what ever reason. These parts will be met with compassion, curiosity and understanding.
Therapy is a space to tell your story and to be witnessed without judgement. Together, through a journey of self-exploration, we will develop your understanding of yourself, with the hopes of moving towards a place of self-acceptance.
My Practice
I am experienced in working with anxiety, trauma, depression, sexuality, relationships, family issues, low self-esteem, and sex and intimacy issues. I aim to create a warm and nurturing space in which you can explore your feelings. I also welcome neurodivergent individuals with ADHD and/or Autism and we can discuss any accommodations you might need in the sessions.
Working with Trauma
My approach to working with trauma is based on an understanding of the relationship between trauma and the body. By incorporating the body in therapy, we are able to understand how your emotional pain manifests physically. The physical symptoms of trauma can be debilitating and bringing awareness to these feelings can make them feel less scary. Your emotional safety in sessions is a priority.
Another part of therapy can be finding meaning in what can feel like a meaningless situation. Trauma can destroy one’s sense of self and meaning in life, and cause feelings of isolation, loneliness, and despair. Part of the work may involve exploring how the trauma has affected and continues to affect you.
Mindfulness and Breath in Therapy
As a trained Yoga, Breathwork, and Meditation teacher, I have an in depth understanding of the body and how it can be influenced by mindfulness and breath. As humans we live through our bodies, not as a separate entity to them. Disruptions in well-being can occur when the body and mind are not working together as one. By directly manipulating the nervous system through mindfulness and breath, we can bring ourselves back into a state of harmony, free from overwhelm. These techniques are an optional part of the therapy. The choice is yours.
