Nadia Wyatt is an integrative counsellor in Billericay, Essex

What attracted you to become a therapist?

I have always been interested in psychology. I originally became interested when I was working as a coach within an HR department when I was in my 20s.

Where did you train?

I trained as a therapist in Southend-on-sea.

What sort of people do you usually see?

I see adults, children (6-17), families and couples. I specialise in anxiety and depression, self-harming, suicidal thoughts, cancer, ADHD and autism.

What do you like about being a therapist?

I like being able to help clients who are severely depressed or severely anxious, or those families whose children are suffering with life-threatening illness to be able to see a ray of sunshine somehow, somewhere. Because I suffered severely with anxiety and depression when my five-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer I am able to be truly empathetic with clients who are suffering with a mental health condition and therefore give them hope of recovery. I just really enjoy being able to get results for my clients and that makes me feel happy and enthusiastic about what I do as a job. I genuinely love my job.

What is less pleasant?

When I am dealing with cases of severe abuse. That is hugely upsetting even for a seasoned professional!

How long you’ve been with welldoing.org and what you think of us?

I only just joined welldoing.org and it seems interesting.

What you do for your own mental health?

As someone who suffered severely with my mental health when my daughter was ill with cancer, I appreciate my wellbeing even more so now. To that extent, I engage in a lot of outside activities to ensure that I am happy and well-balanced. I enjoy Bounce, pilates, yoga, walking my therapy dog, spending time with my family and daughter, socialising, travelling, cinema, theatre, concerts to name but a few. I refuse to be surrounded by negative people (friends or family) as this is not healthy.

You are a therapist in Essex. What can you share with us about seeing clients in this area?

I am not limited by geography when it comes to clients. My clients are local, national and international. Technology is very useful.

What’s your consultation room like?

It is very calming, warm, peaceful, friendly, and there is always the scent of my gorgeous Yankee Candles. I also have my therapy dog with me as she always has a way of calming, welcoming and making my clients feel important. She will only come to clients if the clients want her around them.  I also go for walks with my clients and Puzzle my dog – as walking is very therapeutic in itself; lots of my clients like this option.

What do you wish people knew about therapy?

Where do I begin!

What did you learn about yourself in therapy?

That I love my job ….!
