Joanne Batters is a life coach in Maidstone and online

What attracted you to become a coach?

I have always been passionate about inspiring others to make positive changes in their lives. I discovered life coaching myself when I was approaching 50, my children had both left to go to university and my parents had both passed away. I felt lost and needed help to find my identity/purpose again. I decided to embark on life coach training.

The process gave me back my purpose and I learnt so much about myself over my three years of training. I really want to help others and it gives me great pride to see the progress that they make throughout our sessions.

Where did you train?

As I was working at the time I found a life coaching course through my local adult education centre. I trained through the CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Awarding Body) and spent three years doing courses in life coaching, counselling and more recently short courses in CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and REBT (rational emotive behavioural therapy).

What kind of coaching do you offer?

I offer coaching to help for all types of personal development, life stages, dealing with stress and anxiety, finding focus and motivation, confidence building and helping people to find what really makes them happy in order to lead a more rewarding and fulfilling life.

How does life coaching help people?

Life coaching is a positive acknowledgement that you want to achieve more from yourself and your life. It will help you to unlock your potential and help you reach your goals in order to lead your best life. It helps people to discover their strengths and take you from where you are now to where you want to be.

What sort of coaching clients do you usually see?

I see clients who have reached important life stages (approaching 50, retirement, empty nest), those who have stress/anxiety, who are struggling to find a work/life balance and many more. Clients present to me with many different issues but more recently I have noticed that stress/anxiety has become more of a factor due to the pandemic.

Do you ever suggest books or other materials to clients?

I have recommended books to my clients such as:

Conquering Anxiety and Everyday Confidence by the Speakmans, Be Your Own Life Coach by Fiona Harold, Change Your Life in 7 Days by Eileen Mulligan, Age Well Plan by Susan Saunders.

What do you like about being a coach?

I love to help my clients find clarity in their vision for the future and help them understand that change is always possible with the right support, encouragement and self-belief. I decided to name my business Clarity as clarity of thought brings transformation in our lives and clarity about who you are, where you are going and how I can help you get there.

What is less pleasant?

So far I have been lucky that my experiences have been positive.

What is one life lesson you try to live by?

I always treat people as I want to be treated and not to be too quick to judge someone as we don’t know someone's back story. Deep down I feel that everyone wants to have a happy and fulfilling life but environment or circumstances often lead us down a different path. One quote I like is – the past is a landscape that can’t be altered but we can change the vision of the future.

What do you wish people knew about coaching?

Life coaching is such a positive empowering experience and I feel that everyone would gain from it. It takes you on a journey of discovery in all areas of your life.

Do you have a favourite client testimonial or particular success story?

I had a client who was really lost in life and certain life experiences had left him with no hope for his future. Through our sessions and using a tool called the Wheel of Life, he identified the changes he wanted to make and understood that it was possible to rewrite his story.

He felt he had someone who believed in him and this gave him the confidence and motivation to change the direction of his life. He is doing really well and can use this tool to refer to and keep himself on the right path.
